As in the rest of Texas, Friday night high school football is a widespread obsession with fans of all ages. Arlington High School owns the city’s only state football championship, having won it in’51 under head coach Mayfield Workman. Lamar High School nearly pulled off the same feat in’90, but had to settle for a state runner-up title.
In recent years, Bowie High School, Martin High School and Mansfield Summit High School (a Mansfield ISD school located within Arlington) have enjoyed some success. The University of Texas at Arlington used to field a football team, but the program was canceled in’85 due to funding issues and waning attendance. The football vacancy at the campus stadium, Maverick Stadium, was quickly filled by Arlington High and subsequently Bowie High School. Cravens Field, on the campus of Lamar, and Wilemon Field, on the campus of Sam Houston, are home to the other four teams in the city. Both have enjoyed a history of close and dramatic games.

Lamar High School alumnus Jeremy Wariner won two gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympics, and the 2005 world championship in the 400 meters in Rome. UTA also produced Doug Russell, who won two gold medals in swimming at the Mexico City Olympics in’68 and for whom a park on campus is named.
Champion bodybuilder (Mr. Olympia’98-2005) and former Arlington police officer, Ronnie Coleman resides in Arlington. Houston Comets Guard Erin Grant grew up in Arlington and attended Mansfield high school where she became the first high school basketball player to win four state championships. Many baseball fans felt that Roy Halladay had to go. JP Ricciardi was foolish, according to the media. There’s a different mood in Toronto though. By not giving away the best baseball player in franchise history, Ricciardi probably avoided getting fired.
Just about every team in playoff contention approached the Blue Jays about Halladay, and the team came close to giving him away. From the Yankees to the Phillies, Cardinals, Red Sox, and a bunch more, Halladay was on the wish list of many.
Halladay, still relatively young, has already had a very storied career. A six-time all star, a Cy Young award winner in 2003, and a 142-70 record by age 32 just tells half the tale. Halladay is having another incredible year, with an 11-4 record and a 2.68 ERA.
Pitchers generally hit their peaks in their early to mid 30s, so to assume that Halladay is on the way down would be inaccurate. There’s plenty of gas left in his tank, and to think that he can pitch another 5+ years of top baseball is completely realistic. He’s also one of the game’s most durable pitchers, having pitched 20 complete games over the last 3 seasons.
What makes him the best Blue Jays player, you ask? That will take looking at past players.
How about Dave Stieb? Lower ERA than Halladay in 16 years as a Blue Jay – but Halladay did pitch during the PED era, where so many players boosted their performances through the use of illegal substances. Stieb (176) won more games than Halladay (142), but also lost a lot more (137) than Halladay (70).
That does it for pitchers and it’d seem that Halladay’s numbers are more impressive. How about hitters?
There’s Tony Fernandez and there’s Roberto Alomar. How about them?
Fernandez had a solid run as a Blue Jay in the 1980s, but did nothing in the way of eclipsing Halladay. Typically hitting for a nice batting average and about 7 HRs and 63 RBIs, these numbers are numbers that any team would welcome with open arms, but by no means do they top what Halladay’s done as a Blue Jay.
How about Roberto Alomar? Multiple gold gloves, never hit less than .295, scored a ton of runs, stole more than 50 bases twice, and established himself as one of the best second basemen in the game (if not the best) during his time in Toronto.
While Robbie Alomar was an all-around player for the Jays, can he be considered the best Jay in franchise history? In my opinion, no. Being that he played only 5 seasons, he can’t be considered the greatest Jay. After all, Doc is in his 12th season and has accomplished almost more than any other player already. If Doc continues his success, he will surpass Steib’s win total by far and win more games than any other Blue Jays pitcher.
So, is Doc Halladay the best player to ever suit up as a Blue Jay? My answer: yes. J.P. Ricciardi still may be gone at years end, and to the pleasure of many Jays fans, but for now, he kept the best Blue Jays player ever in a Blue Jays uniform.
