FFmpeg Is An Open Source Video Encoding Commandline Tool

FFmpeg is a computer program that can record, convert and stream digital audio and video in numerous formats. FFmpeg is a command line tool that is composed of a collection of free software / open source libraries. It includes libavcodec, an audio/video codec library used by several other projects, and libavformat, an audio/video container mux and demux library. The name of the project comes from the MPEG video standards group, together with “FF” for “fast forward”. The logo uses a zigzag pattern that shows how MPEG video codecs handle entropy encoding.

FFmpeg is free software and is licensed under the LGPL or GPL depending on your choice of configuration options. If you use FFmpeg or its constituent libraries, you must adhere to the terms of the license in question.

Like most open source projects FFmpeg suffers from a certain lack of manpower. For this reason the developers have to prioritize the work they do and putting out releases is not at the top of the list, fixing bugs and reviewing patches takes precedence. Please don’t complain or request more timely and/or frequent releases unless you are willing to help out creating them.

FFmpeg also supports grabbing and encoding in real time from a TV card. Several FrontEnds/GUIs available like WinFF, Super, Avanti, AutoFF, Xpegt, GVC.

It has been so long since the last release that this 0.5 release should be considered the first FFmpeg release of recent times. Because of the way things have unfolded to date, the notes for this version cannot be entirely conventional. In the next release, it is intended to remove a number of deprecated APIs. We decided to put out a release that includes said APIs for the benefit of third party software. As such, this release: – provides a sync point for said APIs – increases awareness of API changes – allows the next release to detail how to transition from the old to the new The deprecated APIs to be removed are: – imgconvert (to be replaced by libswscale) – vhook (to be replaced by libavfilter)

If FFmpeg is too difficult, here is a hosted ffmpeg alternative video transcoder. No more FFMpeg hosting, video transcoding on demand pay per use.

HTTP Video Streaming For iPhone

There are two ways to deliver video files over the web: (i) progressive download and (ii) streaming. Progressive downloads are typically cheaper and work with any server, but do not offer content protection nor seeking to undownloaded parts. Streaming servers offer these functionalities, but must be installed on your server(s). Since server side access and / or knowledge is not always readily available, some developers choose an “in between” solution of HTTP streaming through the use of a small server side script (e.g. PHP, ASP, etc.).

HTTP streaming works through a very simple mechanism. Every time a seek operation is performed, the media player makes a request to the server side script with a couple of GET variables. One is the file to play and one is the start position. The server side script then starts the video from the offset given. Below is a short example. After you start the video, you can directly jump to any part in the video without having to wait until it is loaded.

Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming proposed draft looks a lot like a method Microsoft began selling last year, called Smooth Streaming. The difference is that Apple’s proposed IETF standard can use anybody’s encoder and broadcast server, and will work with any client software designed to receive the stream. In contrast, Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming is of course designed to exclusively use Microsoft Expression Encoder, Microsoft Internet Information Server with a Smooth Streaming extension, and requires Microsoft’s Silverlight 2 on the client.

Apple attempted to solve the RTSP problem long ago in QuickTime Streaming Server by creating an option to bundle up RTSP streaming video traffic into HTTP packets, which appear identical to standard web traffic and therefore are permitted through most firewalls. This involves a extra layer of overhead however, resulting in a greater demand for bandwidth. For the iPhone, Apple decided to pursue a different strategy, which it calls HTTP Live Streaming.

With Adaptive Streaming, users do not choose a stream, but simply connect to the live event. If bandwidth drops, instead of pausing, the stream is seamlessly transitioned to the next lower bitrate stream. When the bandwidth recovers, the stream will automatically use the higher bitrate. No decision needs to be made by the user. The user is able to watch the live event, in the best quality possible, without pauses or interruptions in the video stream.

For examples of iPhone HTTP Streaming segments, see Ankoder – Online Video Encoding. Viewing live streams requires iPhone 3.0 or Snow Leopard QuickTime X.
